The Spleen: About, Function & Potential TCM Solutions

The spleen is an important aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), being a fundamental in the role towards better health and wellness.

Perspectives of this differ drastically between East and West for their uses in modern medicine.

So, here's an overview of the spleen's function in the body and how it can benefit your wellbeing...

What is the spleen's function?

In Western medicine, the spleen filters out red blood cells from our system and stores blood as part of our immune system.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a different approach, whereby the spleen (also known as pi) is mainly concerned with the digestive function in the body.

It is directly responsible for the assimilation and distribution of nutrients and water through your body.

TCM classifies a functional spleen as one that efficiently distributes 'food essence' to the lungs and heart.

From here, this allows the muscles and tissues within the body to strengthen and become 'well-formed'.

The spleen also plays a similar role to help manage water distribution throughout the body, by extracting it from food and drink, then sending this directly to the lungs, heart and urinary bladder meridians.

In terms of general functions, the spleen is said to:

  • Control digestion
  • Control the flesh and limbs
  • Keep blood in the vessels
  • Store determination or intention
  • Be directly linked to the mouth
  • Reflected in the lips

What about spleen qi?

When spleen qi is strong, this allows blood to be kept within the vessels. When weak, then the blood can escape to form hemorrhages or subcutaneous bleeding which can lead to health concerns.

Just with the heart and liver, the spleen possesses storing yi, which is commonly known as the intent/will power to help us make necessary changes in our lives.

A weakness within the spleen qi can negatively influence our balance, causing weakness, damage, mental confusion, poor memory or indecisiveness.
