Why this one comes out in short bursts
Liu Wansu built this formula to fling every door open at once: out through the skin, the bowels and the urine. That's a lot of clearing, and herbalists never treated it as something to sit on for months. Rhubarb root is the giveaway. It's a laxative herb, and this isn't traditionally a long-term formula. So the old habit was a short spell when the hot, full, bunged-up picture turned up, then a stop, then a look at whether something gentler ought to take over. Six bottles just means you're not caught short when that moment comes round again.
Who tends to keep it in? Mostly the sturdy, warm-running types it was written for, the ones in shirtsleeves in March. If that isn't you, or you're frail, older or prone to loose bowels, it's probably not your formula at all. Skin flaring up again and again, or a gut that just won't get going? Honestly, that's one for your GP, not the cupboard.
For short spells, with breaks in between
Using it in spells, not as a course
When you need it
A short spell
Three in the morning and three at night, and only for a short stretch. Watch your bowels (the rhubarb root works on them, after all). Gone loose? Then stop, simple as that.
Between spells
A proper break
Then it's off to the cupboard again. Herbalists cleared and then stepped back, often moving on to something gentler rather than keeping all that cooling going.
If it keeps coming back
Time to ask
Reaching for it again and again? That's worth noticing. If the skin, bowel or heat-type stuff keeps going, we'd want you to see your GP, and a proper herbalist can tell you if the pattern's even right.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then leave this one alone, honestly, and the same goes if your bowels already run loose, because rhubarb root's a laxative herb. On warfarin or another blood thinner? Dong quai doesn't mix with those. There's a good bit of liquorice too, which can push blood pressure up, so if you take any medication at all, have a word with your GP or pharmacist first. We'd rather you did.
Choosing between them
Three cooling formulas, three different jobs
Plenty of formulas clear Heat. What sets them apart is where the Heat's said to sit, and who's carrying it.
This page
Fang Feng Tong Sheng San
The all-exits formula. Wind-Heat at the surface and more Heat building inside, in a robust, hot, bunged-up person. Thirteen herbs working outwards and downwards at once.
Liver channel Heat
Long Dan Xie Gan Tang
Even more bitter and cold. Herbalists kept it for Heat and Damp along the Liver channel, that red-eyed, red-faced, ready-to-snap sort of person. Also traditionally a short-stint formula.

Bi Yan Pian
Shares siler, schizonepeta and forsythia, but keeps its attention up in the head and nose. That thick, stuffy-headed picture, without the bowel-clearing side.

Marie C., verified buyerFang Feng Tong Sheng San: your questions
So is Fang Feng Tong Sheng San the one people mention for skin?
Historically it is, yep. Hot, red, cross-looking skin is where it tends to crop up in chat, since the old herbalists read that as Wind-Heat pushing its way out at the surface. That's the history, though. It isn't a treatment for eczema, acne or any other skin condition, and a rash or flare that's new, spreading or hanging about should be looked at by your GP.
Why is Bofutsushosan talked about with weight in Japan?
Because in Kampo it's tied to a particular build: heavy-set, hot, with a full, firm belly and bowels that would rather stay put. That's how it found its way into Japanese conversations about weight. It's a food supplement, not a weight-loss product, and with rhubarb root in it, it's not one to take for long stretches hoping to shift pounds. Weight worries are best talked through with your GP.
Does the time of year matter?
It can, in the traditional view. Herbalists tended to think of it in the warmer, stickier months, or after a spell of rich food and late nights, when Heat was said to build up. A pale, chilly person in January was never its target. The picture matters more than the calendar, though, so it's that hot, full feeling they looked for, whatever the season.
What did herbalists suggest eating alongside it?
Lighter food, mostly. The thinking was simple enough: there's no point clearing Heat with one hand and piling it back on with the other. So less fried and fatty food, less alcohol and chilli, more vegetables and plenty of water. Ordinary good sense, really, and it fits rather neatly with the 'cold and cool' school Liu Wansu started.
Should I take all six bottles back to back?
No, and we'd rather say so plainly. It's the same formula as the single bottle, just six of them, and because of the rhubarb root it's meant for short spells with breaks in between. Think of the pack as a stock for the cupboard, or for two sturdy people in one house, each bottle with its own best-before date, rather than a sixty-day plan.
