Supplements for Midlife & Later Life, From China's Oldest Wellbeing Tradition

For more than two thousand years, Chinese medicine has treated ageing well as an art of its own. It is called yǎng shēng (养生), "nourishing life", and it sits at the heart of the classic formulas in this collection. Our supplements for over 50s bring together the herbal tonics that Chinese practitioners have traditionally reached for in midlife and the years beyond, from the famous Rehmannia formulas to classics once prepared for emperors.

Whether you are in your 40s and 50s or enjoying later life, this collection is a place to explore high-strength, traditional herbal formulas chosen for this stage of life, for women and men alike.

Midlife Through the Lens of Chinese Medicine

The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine, written around 2,000 years ago, describes life in cycles: seven-year cycles for women and eight-year cycles for men. In this view, our natural reserves of Jing ("essence"), stored by the Kidney system, gradually change as we pass through our late 40s, 50s and 60s. Many of the most celebrated formulas in Chinese medicine were created to nourish the Kidney, Yin and Yang at exactly this time of life.

The Rehmannia Family: Classic Kidney Tonics

Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan

Named after the Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Cabinet (Jīn Guì), written by the physician Zhang Zhongjing around 1,800 years ago. Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan is the original "Kidney Qi" formula, a gently warming tonic and the ancestor of the whole Rehmannia family.

Liu Wei Di Huang Wan

Created in the Song dynasty more than 900 years ago by adapting Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan, Liu Wei Di Huang Wan became the most famous Kidney Yin tonic in Chinese medicine and remains one of the most widely used formulas in the world today.

Mai Wei Di Huang Wan

Liu Wei Di Huang Wan with Lily-Turf Root and Magnolia-Vine Fruit added. It has a wonderful traditional name: Ba Xian Chang Shou Wan, the "Eight Immortals Longevity Pill".

Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan

A cooler variation of the Rehmannia classic, with Anemarrhena and Phellodendron. It is traditionally chosen when Yin is depleted and the body tends towards "heat", a pattern often seen in midlife.

Back, Knees & Joints

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang

Recorded by Sun Simiao, the Tang dynasty physician remembered in China as the "King of Medicine", who is said to have lived past 100. A classic formula for the lower back, knees and joints, combining Pubescent Angelica Root and Mulberry Mistletoe with nourishing tonic herbs.

Yao Tong Pian

Built around Eucommia Bark and Japanese Teasel, two herbs traditionally used in Chinese herbalism for the lower back and knees in later life.

Guan Jie Yan Wan

A traditional joint formula with Mulberry Leaves and Job's Tears, for those who want to stay active and mobile as the years go by.

Great Tonics & Imperial Classics

Shi Quan Da Bu Tang

The "Ten Complete Great Tonic", first published in an official Song dynasty formulary in the 12th century. With ten herbs including Ginseng, Astragalus, Dong Quai and Rehmannia, it is one of the most complete restorative tonics in Chinese medicine.

Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan

"Seven Treasures for Beautiful Whiskers", a Ming dynasty formula said to have been presented to the Jiajing Emperor. Its key herb, He Shou Wu (Fo-Ti), takes its name from the legend of Mr He, whose hair is said to have stayed black into old age.

Fu Fang Dan Shen Pian

A combination of Red Sage Root (Dan Shen) and Notoginseng, two of the most valued herbs in Chinese medicine for nourishing and moving the blood.

For Men in Later Life

Qian Lie Shu Pian

A modern formula for men, combining Rehmannia with Job's Tears and other traditional herbs. It is a popular choice for men over 50.

Are these supplements suitable for both women and men?
Yes. Most formulas in this collection are traditionally used by both women and men. Qian Lie Shu Pian is a formula for men; women in this stage of life may also like to explore our Menopause collection.

Can I take these alongside my medication?
If you take any prescription medication, please speak to your GP or pharmacist before starting a herbal supplement. This is especially important with blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, particularly before taking Fu Fang Dan Shen Pian.
