A slow knot, given time to loosen
Plum-pit Qi has an annoying habit of coming and going with your mood. A good week, and you forget about it. Then Monday's a horror and, oh look, there it is again, same spot. The old books put it down to feelings you've kept a lid on, so no herbalist was shocked when it hung about. A couple of months was more their sort of timescale than a fortnight. Hence ninety days. At two in the morning and two at night, the bottles last ages.
Now, a fair warning. It's warm and it dries you out a bit, that's its nature. Mouth gone parched halfway through? Feeling hot, thirsty? Herbalists would've stopped there and had a rethink, and so would we. It was never one for people who already run hot and dry, so keep half an eye on how you're getting on each week rather than just ploughing on regardless.
15 days a bottle, about 90 days in all
Ninety days, two tablets twice a day
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 30
Pop two in with breakfast and two with tea. There's ginger and pinellia in there, both kind to a queasy tummy, so it's usually no bother. Dry mouth, though? Watch for that.
Bottles 3–4
Days 31 to 60
Month two. Does the throat thing still come and go with how stressed you are? Herbalists cared about that link (a lot, actually), maybe as much as the lump itself.
Bottles 5–6
Days 61 to 90
Time to take stock. A throat feeling that's still there after three months, or any trouble swallowing at all, is one for your GP.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then give Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang a miss, honestly, as pinellia's long been handled carefully around pregnancy. It's too warm and drying if you already feel very dry, hot and thirsty, too. On any medication? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist first.
Choosing between them
Stuck Qi, but where does it sit?
Herbalists had several formulas for Qi that won't move. So which one? Mostly it came down to where you feel the stuckness, and what tags along with it.

What people say about Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang
Great product! Truly helps with my anxiety and plum pit qi!
Andrew C., verified buyerBan Xia Hou Pu Tang is Great for what's often called globus.
Xun Z., verified buyerBan Xia Hou Pu Tang: your questions
Is Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang linked with globus or anxiety?
People do bring it up there a lot. Doctors call that 'lump in the throat' sensation globus, which sounds an awful lot like plum-pit Qi, and the old texts pin it on worry, so you can see why. It's not a treatment for either, though. New feeling, or one that won't go? See your GP. And don't hang about if swallowing hurts or is hard, your voice changes, or the weight's dropping off without you trying.
How long do people usually stay on it?
Weeks, or a few months at a push. It was for getting through a stuck patch, not for keeping on forever (it's warm and drying, remember). When the throat and the tight chest had calmed down, that was usually that. Stop, or swap to something softer for whoever it was.
Can I take it with Xiao Yao San?
Herbalists have put the two ideas together, since stuck Liver Qi and throat phlegm often turn up in the same person. Is it right for you, though? That's a practitioner's call, we'd say, not a DIY job. Plus, on medication of any kind, run the pair past your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Were there habits herbalists paired with it?
Yes, and they're fairly down to earth. Talking things through, since bottled-up feelings were seen as the root of it. A daily walk to get Qi moving. Going easy on greasy food, sweets and lots of dairy, which Chinese medicine thinks of as phlegm-forming. Oh, and sit down to eat. Not wolfing a sandwich over the keyboard.
Right, and at four a day, how long's the 6-pack going to last me?
Ninety days. Each 60-tablet bottle lasts fifteen days at two in the morning and two at night, and there are six of them, 360 tablets altogether. It's the very same formula as the single bottle, just enough for a three-month run without reordering.
