A tired, stuck middle doesn't rush
Herbalists saw Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang as a formula for two problems at once: a Spleen too tired to do its job, and Qi and Damp left sitting in the middle as a result. The building-up half, the Four Gentlemen, is slow work by nature. A fortnight to fix a weak gut? About as likely as getting fit from one jog round the park, they'd have said. So a couple of months or more was normal, and they'd keep an eye out for an appetite coming back, meals not sitting like a brick, fewer afternoons spent puffed up and sleepy. Four a day means six bottles see you through roughly three months.
Aucklandia and amomum give it a lovely fragrant lift, which is really why herbalists liked it for fussy eaters who are full after three mouthfuls. And yes, they'd nag you about meals. Warm, simple, regular. Skip breakfast and eat a massive tea at ten at night, and frankly no formula's going to cope with that by itself.
15 days a bottle, about 90 days in all
Ninety days, two morning and evening
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 30
Two with breakfast, two in the evening. Then pay attention to the hour or two after you eat. That three o'clock slump told a herbalist as much as your appetite did, funnily enough.
Bottles 3–4
Days 31 to 60
Now the habits. Eat at proper times, have it warm and cooked, chew it (really), and don't wolf lunch at your desk. Cold, raw, greasy stuff was always the villain.
Bottles 5–6
Days 61 to 90
Three months on, have a think back. Still bloated? Bowels changed, weight dropping, or food sticking when you swallow? Then it's your GP, please, whatever else you're giving a go.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Talk to your GP before you start, honestly, since pinellia's always been handled carefully in pregnancy. On warfarin or another blood thinner? Same again, ginseng and those don't get on. Three months is a fair old stretch, too, so pop in and have a word with your GP or pharmacist about anything else you take.

Neighbouring formulas for a weak middle
Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang belongs to a family of Spleen formulas. These two are its closest relatives when the stuck, full side is less of a feature.

Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang
Nine herbs on the Four Gentlemen base. The one for a gut that's tired and weak yet somehow stuffed and bloated too. Never hungry, full in no time.
Damp and looseness
Shen Ling Bai Zhu San
Mild, almost like food, with Job's tears and lotus seed in it. Herbalists picked it when Damp and a soggy, loose middle mattered more than fullness.

Li Zhong Wan
Zhang Zhongjing's four-herb formula to warm the Spleen and Stomach. Cold, sluggish tummy? Hands always round a hot cuppa? That's who it was for.

Agata O., verified buyerXiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang: your questions
I've got IBS. Is Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang the one people mention?
It gets mentioned, sure. The bloated, heavy, can't-predict-it gut that herbalists wrote about sounds a lot like what plenty of people with IBS go through. Still a food supplement, mind, so it's not an IBS treatment. Tummy trouble that won't go away (and especially losing weight, any blood, or new changes once you're past fifty)? See your GP first so they can rule other things out.
Is it associated with feeling sick?
Historically, yes, when the queasiness came with a weak, clogged-up digestion. Tangerine peel and pinellia were supposed to send the Stomach's Qi back down where it belongs. Old theory, mind you, and not a medical claim. Sickness that won't stop, is really bad, or that nobody can explain? GP. And if it's early pregnancy, don't go near pinellia, talk to your midwife or GP instead.
Who traditionally took it?
People with a delicate digestion, of any age: the child who picks at dinner, the office worker who's bloated by three, the older person whose appetite has faded. Herbalists also used it during recovery after illness, once someone was ready to eat again but their digestion hadn't caught up. Men and women alike, the pattern was what counted.
Can I take it with Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang?
Not without advice. Both contain pinellia, so you'd be doubling up on a herb traditionally used with care. Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang is usually chosen for a different picture, the 'lump in the throat' feeling with tension, so a qualified herbalist would normally pick one based on what's going on, not stack them.
How long does the 6-pack last?
Ninety days. It's the same Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang as the single bottle, six bottles of 60 tablets. At two in the morning and two in the evening each bottle lasts fifteen days, so the pack gives you about three months.
