Turning the flame up under the pot
Herbalists saw a cold middle as something that crept in gradually. Iced drinks. Skipped breakfasts all winter. Maybe you've always run a bit cool anyway. Bit by bit the body's 'kitchen' loses its flame, or so the thinking went. And the answer they came up with was ginger and ginseng with white atractylodes and liquorice, taken nice and steady, no rushing. You're on two tablets morning and evening, so a pack's about three months. That's most of a cold season, honestly, and plenty of time to see if warming things up suits you at all.
This is a food supplement, so it isn't for any digestive condition. If your tummy has changed recently, or there's pain, weight loss, blood or anything that won't settle, see your GP before trying anything herbal. Li Zhong Wan's for the old, familiar, chilly sort of sluggish tummy. New or worrying? Not its job, frankly.
15 days a bottle, about 90 days in all
Ninety days, one season of warmth
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 30
Two at breakfast, two at dinner. Easy. And if it were us we'd trade one cold drink a day for a warm one, which is about the oldest trick herbalists had, and it's free.
Bottles 3–4
Days 31 to 60
Is the warmth agreeing with you? Herbalists always asked. Thirsty, a bit flushed, too hot? Then it probably isn't, so stop there and ask a practitioner.
Bottles 5–6
Days 61 to 90
Winter on its way out? That's often when herbalists eased off anything warming. So have a proper think about carrying on or calling it a day.
There's a fair old bit of liquorice in here. High blood pressure, or on tablets for it, or diuretics, or heart medicine? Go carefully. Ginseng can also clash with warfarin and blood sugar medicines. Pregnant, breastfeeding or taking anything at all? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, we'd much rather you did.

Spleen formulas for a tired middle
Li Zhong Wan belongs to a family of Spleen formulas that share a lot of herbs. What tells them apart is usually whatever comes along with the tiredness.

Li Zhong Wan
Just four herbs, ginger first. Icy hands? Always clutching a hot mug? Tummy sulks at anything out of the fridge? That cold, slow middle is exactly where this one lives.
Tired and bloated
Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang
Take the Four Gentlemen, make it six, add a couple of fragrant herbs. It's for a weak digestion that's also stuck and gurgly and full, not so much a cold one.

Shen Ling Bai Zhu San
Soft and food-like, this one. Feel like a sack of spuds after dinner? Bit damp in the middle, and the get-up-and-go got up and went? That's who it was for.

Hasnita M., verified buyerLi Zhong Wan: your questions
Do people take Li Zhong Wan for IBS?
It often comes up in conversations about IBS, but it isn't a treatment for it or for any other digestive condition. Herbalists didn't think in diagnoses. What they wanted was a pattern (here, a cold and sluggish middle). Some people with long-running tummy bother fit that. Lots don't. And if your bowels are doing something new, or changing, or just won't settle? GP first, please.
What did herbalists tell people to eat with Li Zhong Wan?
Warm, cooked and simple, mostly. Soups, stews, porridge and rice congee were the classic advice for a cold middle, with ginger used freely in cooking. Raw salads, iced drinks and lots of food straight from the fridge were the things to cut back on. It's the same thinking as the formula itself: give the stomach's little flame less work to do.
Is Li Zhong Wan more of a winter formula?
Herbalists often treated it that way, since a cold middle tends to feel worse when the weather's cold too. Some people take it through the dark months and drop it for summer. Others, the really chilly types, stick with it most of the year. Calendar aside, what mattered was simple. Did the warmth suit them or not?
Could I have it alongside Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan?
It's been done. One warms the Spleen, the other lifts it, and they share ginseng, atractylodes and liquorice, so they're close cousins really. Which means double the liquorice, mind. Blood pressure a bit high? Then that's not ideal. Honestly, most practitioners would just pick one, or make you up your own blend. We'd ask a qualified herbalist. Any medicines? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist too.
So how long's the Li Zhong Wan 6-pack going to last me?
About ninety days, or three months. Each bottle holds 60 tablets and Li Zhong Wan is taken two in the morning and two in the evening, so one bottle lasts fifteen days and six last ninety. It's exactly the same four-herb formula as the single bottle, simply enough for a whole cold season.
