A firm push, for a set stretch

This isn't a formula herbalists left people on indefinitely. It's one of the more moving ones, full of fragrant herbs like cyperus, tangerine peel and finger citron, and the traditional caution was that months and months of moving herbs could leave you feeling a bit dry and depleted. So it was used for a stuck patch. Tension well set in, the tight sides, the sighing, the short fuse. Then, once things had loosened, many practitioners would switch to something gentler. Sixty days fits that nicely. Long enough to give it a fair go, with a natural end built in.

Expect it to be a formula you notice in the context of your life. Stressful weeks will still be stressful. Herbalists saw it as a nudge, and paired it with moving your body and letting off steam. If the tension is mostly emotional and getting on top of you, that's a conversation worth having with your GP too.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days with a review at the end

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three when you get up, three later on. Where's the tension sitting, and when does it flare? Herbalists cared a lot about the link with mood, so a few honest notes help.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Keep going steadily. Gone dry, thirsty, a bit wiped out for no reason? Old sign the moving herbs are overdoing it. So stop, and have a think.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Finish the spell and review. Many herbalists would move on to Xiao Yao San from here. Pain under your ribs, or in your tummy, that won't go? Your GP, please.

Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then not this one, honestly, as Sichuan lovage gets the Blood moving. High blood pressure, or on water tablets (diuretics)? The liquorice in Chai Hu Shu Gan San makes it a poor fit there too. Any medication at all, have a word with your GP or pharmacist first.

Where tension lands decides the formula

Stuck Qi was one of the commonest pictures in a herbalist's clinic. These neighbours share the idea, but not the details.

What people say about Chai Hu Shu Gan San

★★★★★

Amazing product, I had been so ill for 8 weeks, constantly nauseous, couldn’t stomach food & had zero energy, within 2 days of taking these tablets I was full of energy & my appetite returned. I highly recommend.

I've been taking Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan for about 7 weeks (3 pills, twice/day) for a large (12cm+ fibroid). I believe the minimum recommended time to take is 30 days and I'm past that. My fibroid may have reduced a little (no more…

Not happy with the 126mg of Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose per tablet 😢 but these pills are miraculous! I’ve only taken these capsules for 12 days and can already feel and see, that my uterus has shrunk (fibroids). I am now a…

Chai Hu Shu Gan San: your questions

People talk about Chai Hu Shu Gan San and IBS, or stress bloating. Why?

Because herbalists grabbed it when worry seemed to land straight in the tummy. Bloated, burpy, up and down with your mood. So IBS chats bring it up a fair bit. A treatment for IBS, though? No, it isn't. Changes in bowel habit, tummy pain that won't settle, or blood are all things your GP needs to know about.

Does it come up around premenstrual tension?

Quite often. Stuck Liver Qi was the classic Chinese medicine explanation for that tight, irritable, tender week before a period, so it's a familiar name in those discussions. It isn't a treatment for PMS or PMDD, and if your mood dips badly before periods, please talk to your GP. There's good support available.

Is spring a particular time for it?

In the old way of thinking, it was. Wood's the spring element and the Liver sits under it, and herbalists spotted stuck Liver Qi flaring up just as the seasons turned (when everything's shoving its way up out of the ground). Some practitioners would bring a formula like this out around March and April. It isn't tied to the season, though. Tension tends to ignore the calendar.

Were there habits herbalists recommended with it?

Yes. Movement was the big one, since stuck Qi wants moving and a brisk walk does that cheaply. Letting feelings out rather than bottling them up. Going easy on alcohol, which Chinese medicine thinks of as heating the Liver. And not eating when you're wound up, which herbalists thought sent the tension straight into the stomach.

Why does the 6-pack cover sixty days?

Because it's six of our standard 60-tablet bottles, and at three tablets morning and evening each bottle lasts ten days. Same seven herbs as the single bottle. Sixty days happens to suit how herbalists used this formula, as a set spell for a stuck patch with a review at the end.
