Midlife isn't a week long, and nor is this
The change doesn't happen on a Tuesday. It drifts in over months and years, and Chinese medicine always treated it that way, as a slow shift in the body's deepest reserves rather than one bad night. Formulas for it were taken in courses for the same reason. Rehmannia is a rich, slow herb (it's why poria and rice are in there, to stop it sitting heavy), so herbalists weren't looking for anything dramatic in the first week or two. Sixty days at six a day gives you room to see a pattern, warm evenings and all, rather than guessing from a handful of days.
There's one thing to keep in mind over that time. There's he shou wu in it, and the MHRA has tied that herb to rare liver problems. So over two months, you'd want to know the warning signs (they're just below) and keep your GP posted. Fair enough?
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days, with an eye on your evenings
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Six a day, half with breakfast and half later on. We'd keep a little note going too, nothing fancy, just whether the evening ran warm, how you slept and what sort of mood you were in.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Same again. Now, the he shou wu bit. Tummy pain? Dark wee? Skin or eyes going yellow? Stop there and then and get yourself to your GP.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Have a flick back through what you wrote. Herbalists often adjusted around now, perhaps towards something cooler or calmer, so it's a good moment to talk to a practitioner about what's next.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then it's not for you, sorry. On HRT or any hormone medicine? Talk to your GP before you mix them. And because there's he shou wu in it (the MHRA has linked it to rare liver problems), if your liver's ever played up, or you're on regular medication, have a word with your GP or pharmacist first. We'd really rather you did.
Choosing between them
Three midlife formulas, three different pictures
No herbalist worth their salt gave every midlife woman the same pot. What were they looking for? Whichever was shouting loudest, really, be it the heat, the wound-up feeling or those rotten nights.

Geng Nian An
Kidney Yin a bit low, some heat sitting on top, and a few calming herbs thrown in for a mind that won't sit still. The broad, steady midlife pick.

Jia Wei Xiao Yao San
Chosen when stuck Liver Qi led the picture: wound up, sighing, a short fuse, with warmth and irritability turning up together.

Suzy B., verified buyerGeng Nian An: your questions
Is Geng Nian An used for the menopause?
Historically, yes, that's what it was built around. Geng nian is the Chinese term for the change, and herbalists in China turned to it for the warm, restless, short-tempered side of those years, as their theory describes it. It isn't a treatment for the menopause or its symptoms, though. Bleeding after your periods have stopped, very heavy or irregular bleeding, or anything that worries you should go to your GP.
Do I take it before or after my periods stop?
Either, in the traditional view, because it's matched to a pattern rather than a date. Herbalists chose it when the picture fitted: warmth in the evenings, nights that wouldn't settle, a fizzy sort of mood. Some women first come to it in the perimenopause years, others well after. If you're still having periods and could be pregnant, though, it's not one to take.
Can I take it with Jia Wei Xiao Yao San?
Possibly, yes, and some practitioners do put them together when it looks like tension and low Yin are both in the mix. Just don't double up off your own bat. They're each a whole formula already! Ask a proper herbalist if you need one, the other or both (and do let your GP know what you're on).
What did herbalists suggest alongside it?
Cooling, moistening habits, in the Chinese medicine sense. Going easy on spicy food, alcohol and late nights, all of which the theory says burn up Yin. Earlier bedtimes. Pears, mung beans and gentle soups turn up a lot in the old advice. None of it's magic, but it does fit the thinking behind the formula rather well.
And the 6 pack's just six of the singles, is it?
Yep, that's all it is. Six bottles of the same Geng Nian An, sixty tablets in each, so sixty days at six a day. The only real difference is that you're not reordering every ten days. Each bottle carries its own best-before date, and the unopened ones are happiest kept sealed somewhere cool and dry.
