Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Rehmannia & Polygonum Vine) - 6 x 60 tablets

Putting water back in the pan

Herbalists explained Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan with a saucepan. Months of late nights boil the water off, so the flame underneath (the Heart) runs hot and the mind won't settle. You can't refill a pan that's been boiling dry for a year in an evening, and practitioners didn't pretend you could. Yin formulas like this one were the slow, cooling, moistening sort, and they'd usually have someone on them for a couple of months while asking about sleep, dry mouth, those warm evenings and the mouth ulcers that come and go.

There's a story, of course. A monk works himself into the ground and the recipe turns up in a dream. Believe it or don't! Herbalists took a very down-to-earth lesson from it anyway, which is that you take the formula and you rest too, not one in place of the other. Two months of tablets with no change to your hours would have struck them as missing the point rather badly.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days of topping up

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three tablets morning and evening. Pay attention to the evening heat and dry mouth as well as sleep. Herbalists watched all of it, not just bedtime.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

The middle stretch. If you can, claw back an earlier night or two each week. The whole theory hinges on not boiling the pan dry again.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Review where you've got to. Palpitations, persistent mouth ulcers or months of poor sleep deserve a proper look from your GP, whatever else you're taking.

On warfarin or any blood thinner? Give this one a miss, there's dong quai and red sage in it. Ever had liver problems? Skip it too, because of the he shou wu. Yellowish skin, dark wee or a sore tummy at any point over the two months, and you stop and get checked, simple as. Pregnant or breastfeeding, only with your GP's okay. Anything else you take, have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, honestly.

Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan

Thirteen herbs, aimed at Heart and Kidney Yin. You know the type: wide awake at 2am, mouth like sandpaper, getting warm every evening for no reason.

Kidney Yin base

Liu Wei Di Huang Wan

The house formula for Kidney Yin. Herbalists chose it for warm palms and soles, a tired back and gradual drying with age, with less focus on the restless mind.

Te Xiao An Mian Pian

A modern patent formula with silk tree bark and night-joining vine, picked when the restless Shen came with irritability rather than dryness and depletion.

Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan: your questions

Does Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan come up around menopause and night sweats?

Yes, quite a bit. Low Yin, the old way, meant feeling hot in the evenings, dry and sleeping in fits and starts, which a lot of women going through the menopause will recognise, and herbalists did historically turn to Yin formulas then. It's a food supplement, though, not a menopause treatment. Night sweats, a pounding heart or poor sleep that's new or won't shift? That's your GP.

So who was it really meant for?

Bookish types, mainly. Scholars, students, people grafting long hours with their heads, which fits that worn-out monk nicely. Herbalists also thought of it for people in later life, when Yin is said to run lower naturally. It wasn't seen as a men's or women's formula particularly. The pattern mattered more than who you were.

Is it better taken in a particular season?

Some herbalists favoured cooling, moistening Yin formulas in late summer and autumn, when dryness is said to be at its peak, or after a hot, sleepless summer. Central heating in winter dries people out too, mind you. If we're honest, most folk start the week they twig what's going on, and the calendar doesn't come into it.

What if I took Liu Wei Di Huang Wan as well?

Not without advice. They've both got rehmannia at the heart of them, both Yin formulas, so the two together is a lot of rich, gloopy, moistening stuff, and a delicate stomach won't thank you for it. A proper herbalist might put you on one and then the other later on. Or they'd just choose the better fit. Doubling up yourself isn't something we'd suggest.

Is the 6-pack the same Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan?

Yes, the same thirteen-herb recipe without cinnabar, in six bottles of 60 tablets. Three in the morning, three at night, and a bottle does you ten days. Six of them? Sixty days. Only the quantity changes, which simply saves you reordering every ten days.
