Watering the pot plant, not flooding it
Herbalists described Kidney Yin running low as a gradual drawing down of a reserve, so nobody expected it to be paid back in a week. Liu Wei Di Huang Wan is famously balanced, three herbs that build and three that drain, and that's exactly why practitioners were comfortable keeping people on it for long stretches. In China it's the sort of thing grandparents take as a matter of routine, like a morning cup of tea. Sixty days at six a day suits that easy-going style rather well.
Because it's so even-handed, a lot of practitioners use it as a starting point and then move to a relative if the picture shifts. More heat? Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan. Dryness reaching the throat? Mai Wei Di Huang Wan. And if night-time heat or sweating is new for you, mention it to your GP.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days on the rehmannia base
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three tablets morning and evening, with food if rehmannia feels rich on your stomach. Make a quick note of how warm your evenings feel and how dry your mouth is on waking.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Herbalists kept an eye on the stomach around here. Rehmannia feels heavy to some people, so if digestion's grumbling or loose, pause and check with a practitioner.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Compare with those early notes. Has the picture changed? Here's the bit where a herbalist might've stuck with Liu Wei, or swapped to a cousin, or just given it a rest.
Gentle, yes. But there's tree peony bark in it, and that's always been handled carefully in pregnancy. Pregnant, then, or breastfeeding, or on regular medication? Pop in and ask your GP or pharmacist before you start, honestly.
Choosing between them
Two relatives in the rehmannia family
It's got relatives everywhere, Liu Wei. These two carry its six herbs, and how did a herbalist choose? Mostly by where the dryness (or the cold) seemed to be hiding.
This page
Liu Wei Di Huang Wan
Six herbs, even-handed, a touch on the cool side. It's the go-to when Kidney Yin's low and you've got warm palms and feet, a dry mouth and knees that feel their age.
Reaches the Lungs
Mai Wei Di Huang Wan
Same six again, with ophiopogon and schisandra added. If the dryness had crept up from the Kidneys into the Lungs and left your throat parched, this was the pick.

Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan
Liu Wei's granddad, basically, cinnamon bark still in. Low and chilly rather than low and warm? Then it's this one you'd look at.

Sally J., verified buyerLiu Wei Di Huang Wan: your questions
I've heard Liu Wei Di Huang Wan mentioned with the menopause. Why's that?
Historically it does come up a lot there, yes. Warm evenings and feeling dried out? That's pretty much the Kidney Yin picture, so the two got talked about together. It isn't a treatment for menopausal symptoms, though, and HRT and other options are well worth discussing with your GP. Where there seemed to be more heat, herbalists would also look at relatives such as Zhi Bai Di Huang Wan or Geng Nian An.
Who traditionally took it, young or old?
Mostly older people, since Yin was thought to drain away with the years, but never only them. The Song physician Qian Yi actually created it for children, by taking the warming herbs out of an older Kidney formula. So it's been given at both ends of life. These days it's best known in China as a later-life staple.
Does diet matter while taking it?
Herbalists thought it did. Piles of chilli, strong drink, late nights? All said to burn Yin up, so easing off was the advice. Pears and soups (and loads of water) were more the idea. And because rehmannia is rich, regular, simple meals were thought to help the stomach cope with it.
Is there a best time of year for it?
Not really, which is part of its charm. Unlike the warming Kidney formulas, Liu Wei is balanced enough for any season. You might feel drier in autumn, or once the radiators go on, and herbalists did lean on it a bit more then. Proper scorcher of a summer? A practitioner might steer you to a cooler cousin for a while.
And how many days will the 6-pack see me through?
Sixty days. There are six bottles of 60 tablets, 360 in all, and at three in the morning and three at night each bottle lasts ten days. The formula's identical to the single bottle, the same six herbs, and the longer supply suits a formula herbalists traditionally kept people on for weeks at a time.
