You stack the logs, then you light it
What herbalists rather loved about this one? It builds first and warms second. Most of each tablet is rehmannia, cornus and Chinese yam, with a smaller amount of cinnamon bark sitting on top. That's not a recipe for a quick blast of heat. It was meant to be taken steadily, the way you'd keep a stove ticking over through winter, and in Japan, where it's known as Hachimijiogan, it's long been a later-life formula people stay with for a good while. Sixty days gives that slower rhythm room to work.
It's a warm formula, so it belongs with people who run cold. If you're more the duvet-kicking type, or you get warm and dry in the evenings, look at the neighbours below instead. And things like getting up repeatedly in the night, or a new ache in the lower back, should be checked by your GP first.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
A season of steady warmth
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three tablets morning and evening. Some old-school practitioners had people take Kidney pills with a little lightly salted water. You don't have to, of course. We just quite like the old habit.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Too warm for you? You'd know. Thirsty all the time, pink in the face, a bit cooked. If that's how it's going, we'd honestly stop and have a word with a practitioner, not just plough on.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Lots of people like these last bottles to land in the cold months (that's when Kidney Yang gets tested, so the theory goes). Then what? Have a think, maybe with a practitioner, and go from there.
Got a cold or a temperature, or you just run hot anyway? Then leave this warming one alone for now. Liver problems? Cinnamon bark in bigger amounts isn't ideal there, mind. And if you're pregnant or breastfeeding or on any medicine, we'd really rather you had a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start.

Kidney formulas for people who feel the cold
Several Aura formulas sit in Kidney territory. Of those, it's these two that'd usually end up on the table next to Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan when a herbalist was making up their mind.
This page
Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan
Where the whole rehmannia family started, cinnamon bark and all. It's the one for someone chilly and slowed down, Kidney Yang running low, and you feel it in your back and feet.
Warmth for the back
Yao Tong Pian
Newer, a pharmacy formula really, with eucommia and teasel up front. If the cold had gone and parked itself in the small of the back (worse on grim, damp days) this got picked.

Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan
Five little seeds and berries. Barely warming at all, honestly. It's about low Kidney Essence, that running-on-empty feeling, more than being cold, and it was mostly men who took it.

What people say about Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan
It is helping overall with bladder and kidney health
Doreen P., verified buyer60 tablets effectively treated the rhinitis I was suffering from, and also benefited my kidney meridian in other ways.
Michael G E., verified buyerI have used a similar product from another company and I find these better. The tablets are much easier to swallow and have already helped with my lower back pain, which helps with being more comfortable when sleeping. And,…
Patricia L., verified buyerJin Gui Shen Qi Wan: your questions
So is Jin Gui Shen Qi Wan really an older person's formula?
Mostly, yeah. Over in Japan it goes by Hachimijiogan and it's about as well known as Kampo gets, very much a later-life thing. Makes sense when you think about it: feeling the cold, slowing down, a back that's had enough. That tends to arrive with the years. Younger people who fitted the picture weren't turned away, though. Older and juggling a few medicines? Pop in and see your GP or pharmacist first, we'd say.
Why do people mention it with getting up in the night?
It's down to the old books. They count trips to the loo at night as part of the Kidney Yang picture, and this formula's been talked about alongside that for centuries. That's history, though, not a treatment for anything bladder or prostate related (we can't claim that and wouldn't). If you're going more often, nights especially, your GP really is who you want to see first.
Does it matter what time of year I take it?
Plenty of herbalists reckoned so. Winter's the Water season in this way of thinking, and that's when Kidney Yang supposedly has it hardest. So you'd see warming Kidney formulas leaned on from autumn through to early spring. A scorching summer? Some people got switched to something gentler then, or just had a break. Not a rule. Still, it's a fairly sensible rhythm, if you ask us.
Could I take it with Yao Tong Pian too?
Maybe, but that's a practitioner's call, not ours. They're both warming, and they've both got cinnamon bark and tree peony bark in, so you'd be piling warmth on warmth. Not always clever. Frankly, most herbalists would just pick one, depending on whether the chill's all over or mostly in your back. On any medication? Then a quick chat with your GP or pharmacist too, please.
What do I actually get in the 6-pack?
Six of the usual bottles, so 360 tablets, and it's the very same formula as the single bottle. Nothing's changed. You're on three in the morning and three at night, which makes each bottle last ten days and the whole lot sixty. Seven herbs, the cinnamon bark, same label. Just more of it.
