Little by little, for the deep reserve
Think of Jing (Essence) as a battery. You get it at birth, and you spend it, slowly, the rest of your life. Late nights, overwork and the years all draw it down, gradually. So the herbalists who used Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan were never in a rush. Seeds like dodder and goji were seen as quietly nourishing, the opposite of a quick fix, and the Ming doctors who wrote it down had men in mind who'd run themselves ragged and wanted to start a family. A two-month supply suits that slow-and-steady way of thinking far better than one bottle at a time.
It's a light formula as Kidney tonics go, with Job's tears there to stop all those rich seeds sitting heavily. That's partly why people find it easy to stay with for a while. Herbalists would still want to know how you were sleeping and eating, since no formula tops up a battery that's being drained faster every week.

Three tablets morning and evening. A herbalist would start with the boring stuff. How much sleep are you getting? How hard are you working? Running on fumes, are you?

No big changes, just carry on. Guarding your Essence used to mean easy does it all round, so fewer late ones, a bit less booze, and not burning the candle at both ends.

Take stock of energy, back and knees. Been trying for a baby for a year with no luck? See your GP. Sooner, frankly, if it's worrying you.
On warfarin? Careful, there have been reports of goji berry interacting with it. Schisandra can also change the way your body deals with some medicines, so any regular prescription wants checking first. If you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, talk to your GP or pharmacist before starting a two-month supply.

Does Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan come up in conversations about male fertility?
It does, very much so, given a name that means carrying on the family line. Historically it was what Ming-era men took when hoping to start a family. That's tradition, though, not a fertility treatment, and it's a food supplement. Struggling to get pregnant? Then it's both of you off to the GP, honestly, who can sort out proper tests.
What age group traditionally took it?
Two groups, roughly. Younger men hoping to become fathers, which is where the name comes from, and older people as the years added up and the Kidneys were thought to weaken. Herbalists didn't really see age as the deciding factor, though. They looked for the Kidney picture: tired lower back and knees, low drive, a deep sort of weariness.
Can women take Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan too?
Herbalists do give it to women when they see the same Kidney Essence picture, though it's best known as a men's formula. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are a different matter, and you'd want your GP's view first. If it's more about your cycle, though, a herbalist would probably steer you elsewhere, Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan maybe, or Wen Jing Tang.
Would a herbalist have told me to change anything else?
Oh, they'd have told you all right. Working yourself silly, too many late nights, overdoing it generally, all of that was meant to drain Essence. So rest up, sleep at sensible hours, eat properly, and go steady. Warm, nourishing meals and not too much alcohol would have been on the list. The formula was meant to support a life that wasn't spending faster than it saved.
Is the 6-pack the same Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan?
Yes. Six bottles of the same five-seed formula, 60 tablets each. Three in the morning and three at night empties a bottle in ten days, so you're looking at sixty days from the lot. Nothing's different in the tablets or the dose. You've just got more of them, which is handy for a formula people took for months anyway.
