Mai Wei Di Huang Wan (Rehmannia & Chinese Yam) - 6 x 60 tablets

Feeding the mother to water the child

Herbalists saw the Lung and Kidney as mother and child, Metal feeding Water, so dryness in one was thought to drag on the other over time. Slow loop, that. So what does this formula do about it? Both ends at once. Rehmannia and friends see to the Kidneys, ophiopogon keeps the Lungs moist, and schisandra's there to hold it all in (that was its job). People were kept on rehmannia formulas for weeks, months even, so sixty days at six a day is really just letting this one settle.

You'll find it's often picked later in life, since Yin's meant to dwindle as the years go by. Is the dry throat new, though? Or the warm nights? Coming with a cough, weight loss, heavy sweats? We'd honestly see your GP before any herbal anything.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days for Lungs and Kidneys

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three in the morning, three at night, with food if the rehmannia sits heavy. How's your throat when you wake? Evenings warm? Scribble it down. You'll want that to compare against.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Tummy check time, the old herbalists would say. Heavy, or a bit loose? Pause it and ask a practitioner. All fine? Keep going, and keep the warm water coming.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Out come the notes. A herbalist might keep you on it, or go back to plain Liu Wei, or if the heat's taken over, pick a cooler relative.

Pregnant? Tree peony bark's usually kept away from pregnancy, so best leave it. Breastfeeding too. Then there's schisandra, which can fiddle with how your liver handles some prescription drugs. On anything regular? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist first. We'd much rather you did.

Choosing between them

Neighbours for dryness and warm nights

Where's Mai Wei sit? Sort of in between. There's a Lung-and-Stomach one on one side of it, and a cooler Kidney one on the other. Herbalists picked between them by where the dryness started and how hot things ran.

Mai Wei Di Huang Wan: your questions

Does Mai Wei Di Huang Wan come up around a dry cough at night?

Historically it often does, because a dry, lingering cough that's worse at night fits the Lung and Kidney Yin picture herbalists had in mind. But treating a cough? Not something we can say it does. Three weeks and still coughing, or there's blood, or you're breathless or losing weight? GP first. No question.

Should I take Mai Wei Di Huang Wan at a particular time of year?

Autumn and stuffy heated rooms were when dryness got worse, herbalists reckoned, and that's when they'd reach for something to moisten the Lungs. But Mai Wei's roots are in the Kidneys, so folk with dryness that's been around for years take it all year. In a hot, humid summer a practitioner might suggest a pause, since rich rehmannia can feel heavy in damp weather.

What daily habits fit alongside it?

Rest and moisture, mostly. What drained Yin, as herbalists saw it? Late nights and overwork, mostly, so the first bit of advice was bed earlier. Pears. Soup. Warm water. And steering clear of booze and chilli and smoky rooms, for the Lungs' sake. Nothing fancy, just spending a bit less of yourself.

Can I take it with Sheng Mai San?

People have, but we'd leave that to a practitioner. You'd be getting ophiopogon and schisandra twice over, and schisandra can muck about with how some medicines get processed. Sheng Mai San's more for tiredness and summer wearing you out. Mai Wei? Deep dryness. So ask a qualified herbalist, and if you're on any medicine, your GP or pharmacist as well.

Is the 6-pack any different from the single bottle?

Nope. Same formula exactly, eight herbs with rehmannia in charge. You simply get six 60-tablet bottles, 360 tablets in all, which at three morning and evening comes to sixty days. That's handy for a formula herbalists traditionally kept people on for weeks rather than days.
