Rain on parched ground takes a while
One glass of water and you're sorted? Not in this tradition, sadly. The way herbalists told it, Lung and Stomach Yin is a sort of reserve, and weeks of dry air and talking all day (and never quite enough sleep) slowly drain it. So you top it up slowly too. Hence the whacking great dose of ophiopogon, with plain old rice and jujube and a bit of ginseng backing it up, all there to keep the moisture coming. Sixty days gets you through most of a dry season. Which, frankly, is when it got used most.
Teachers, singers, anyone who talks for a living, it's always been a bit of a favourite with that lot. A cough that's hung about more than a few weeks, though? Any blood, getting breathless, a croaky voice that just won't come back? That's your GP, honestly, not a supplement.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Two months through the dry season
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three in the morning and three at night. Moistening formula, moistening habits, that was the old logic. So sip warm water, go easier on the coffee, and why not pop a bowl of water by the radiator?
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Just carry on. Chest or throat getting worse, not better? Something new turned up? Then stop, and go and see your GP, we'd say.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
The season's turning by now. Plenty of people stop here, some switch to something else, and if you're stuck a herbalist's worth a chat.
A few things, briefly. Pinellia's long been a 'careful in pregnancy' herb. The ginseng can clash with warfarin or blood sugar medicines, and liquorice may nudge your blood pressure up a bit. Pregnant or breastfeeding? On anything at all? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, please.
Choosing between them
Dry Lungs, dry Kidneys, a stuck throat
People often mix this up with two others of ours. In one the dryness goes deeper. The other's for a throat that feels blocked, not parched, which is a different thing altogether.
This page
Mai Men Dong Tang
Six herbs led by ophiopogon. For Lung and Stomach Yin running low: dry, a bit warm and tickly from throat to chest, with Qi pushing upwards.
Dryness from deeper down
Mai Wei Di Huang Wan
Six Ingredient Rehmannia plus ophiopogon and schisandra. Picked when dryness seemed to start in the Kidneys and climb up to the Lungs, with warm nights.

Ban Xia Hou Pu Tang
Zhang Zhongjing's formula for 'plum-pit Qi', that feeling of something stuck in the throat. It's drying and moving, so suits a knotted throat, not a parched one.

Does Mai Men Dong Tang come up in conversations about a dry cough?
Yes, historically it's one of the formulas herbalists turned to when a cough was dry and tickly and came with the upward rush of Qi that Zhang Zhongjing called counterflow. We can't call it a cough treatment, mind. Had one for over three weeks? Coughing blood, short of breath, chest hurting? Get yourself to the GP quickly.
Is autumn when people traditionally took Mai Men Dong Tang, then?
Traditionally, yes. Autumn belongs to Metal and the Lungs, and it's the season herbalists linked with dryness. Central heating stretches that dry spell right through winter for a lot of us, which is why it's popular then too. In a damp, muggy summer it's usually less relevant, and a practitioner might suggest something else.
What everyday habits fit alongside it?
Moistening ones. Pears, soup, a bowl of congee, little sips of warm water all day long. That was the sort of thing. Less chilli, less strong coffee, less booze, since they were all meant to dry you out. Rest your voice now and then. Don't let the bedroom get bone dry. Same idea. Smoking is about the least helpful thing for a dry Lung, in any tradition.
Is it suitable for older people?
It can be, and herbalists often had older people in mind, since Yin and fluids were thought to dwindle with age. It's a gentle, food-like formula with rice and jujube in it. The catch? If you're older you're likelier to be on something that matters here (warfarin, say, or diabetes or blood pressure tablets). Worth a quick word with your pharmacist.
How long's the 6-pack going to last, roughly?
Sixty days at the usual dose. Each of the six bottles holds 60 tablets, and three in the morning plus three in the evening gets you ten days per bottle. It's the same Mai Men Dong Tang as the single bottle, the same six herbs, just enough to see you through a long dry season.
