Why a formula like this was never a one-week thing
Zhang Zhongjing's instructions were tiny: one small pill before meals, edging up only if nothing seemed to be happening. That tells you a lot. Blood stasis, in the old view, settles in over months, like silt at a bend in a river, so nobody expected it to shift in a few days. Herbalists in China, and later in Japan, gave this formula as a steady daily course over weeks. Six bottles matches that rhythm. Sixty days is two full cycles for most women, which is about the shortest stretch over which anyone could sensibly look back and say how things have been.
Two cycles also gives you something to compare. A herbalist would ask about timing, colour, clots and that heavy, dragging feeling low down, and a simple diary answers those questions far better than memory does. Anything that changes or worries you along the way is one for your GP.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Two cycles, one bottle at a time
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three in the morning, three in the evening, every day, period or not. Start a cycle diary: dates, flow, clots, and where any heavy or stuck feeling sits.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Usually your first full cycle on it. Keep the diary going. Unusually heavy bleeding, bleeding between periods or new pain needs your GP, not more tablets.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Cycle number two. Lay both months out next to each other and have a proper look. Carry on? Have a break? Try one of its neighbours? We'd make that call with a practitioner if you can.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then no, honestly, because peach kernel, red peony and tree peony bark were always kept well away from both. Trying for a baby? Talk to your GP first. And if you're on warfarin, clopidogrel or a daily aspirin (or any other medicine, really), or you've got an operation coming up, have a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start. We'd rather you did.
Choosing between them
Three women's formulas, three different stories
One recipe for every woman? Never. The old herbalists looked at whoever was sat in front of them and picked from there, and these two are the ones Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan gets weighed up against most.

Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan
The 'moving' formula. Written for heaviness and lumps low in the belly, later linked with painful, clotty periods. Herbalists described the pattern as Blood that has become stuck.

What people say about Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan
Great product as per usual, its a bit too soon to differentiate the effect that they have on me as yet. I haven't been taking them long enough to say.

Anesher E., verified buyerGui Zhi Fu Ling Wan: your questions
People mention Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan with fibroids, cysts and PCOS. Why's that?
Because of what Zhang Zhongjing wrote it for, back then: lumps and a full feeling low in the belly. So these days it gets talked about alongside fibroids, ovarian cysts and PCOS, that's all. History. It isn't a treatment for any of them, and heavy bleeding, pelvic pain or anything else that worries you should go to your GP.
Do people take it all month, or just around their period?
Traditionally, all month. Nobody switched it on the week before and off again after. Why? Because Blood stasis was seen as something that had moved in and unpacked, not a visitor who pops round once a month, so it went in day after day for weeks. Mind you, some practitioners do fiddle with the timing. Seeing one? Then do what they say.
So what were herbalists keeping an eye on, week to week?
Mainly the cycle, month against month. Was the blood darker or brighter? Clots or none? Was that heavy, stuck feeling down low still hanging about? They'd sneak a look at your lips and tongue too, checking for a dusky, purply tinge. Old signs, those, not medical tests, and if something feels wrong it's your GP you want, not a tongue.
Is it for people who run hot, or cold?
Bit of both, funnily enough, and herbalists rather liked that. You've got cinnamon twig warming things up and the two peonies cooling them down, so temperature wasn't a big worry. Now, if you were properly cold (icy hands, cramps only a hot water bottle could touch), they'd likely have gone for something warmer, like Wen Jing Tang.
Is the 6 pack the same formula as the single bottle?
It is. Same five herbs, same amounts, just six bottles of 60 instead of one. Six a day gets you sixty days out of it, roughly two cycles. Every bottle's got its own best-before date on it, so leave the ones you haven't opened sealed up somewhere cool and dry till you're ready.
