Why herbalists counted in cycles, not days
Herbalists working with women's formulas tended to think in cycles. A cold palace with thin Blood wasn't something they expected to change in a week, so they'd look at how a woman felt across one cycle, then the next, before deciding much. Sixty days? Two cycles, give or take. And it's a builder, this one (rehmannia, dong quai and white peony doing the building, eucommia and teasel adding the warmth), so it suited that patient, one-month-then-the-next approach rather well, we think.
You'll hear it mentioned when cycles are late, light or chilly. We won't pretend it treats anything menstrual or fertility related, though, and we're not making any fertility claims. Missed periods, very heavy or painful ones, or trouble conceiving should go to your GP first. It's also one to stop the moment you know you're pregnant.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days across two cycles
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three tablets morning and evening. Herbalists liked people to keep the lower belly and feet warm, so dig out the slippers. A simple cycle diary makes looking back much easier.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Roughly your second cycle on it. Note anything new. Could you be pregnant? Do a test before you carry on. Herbalists always stopped it once a pregnancy was confirmed.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Get the diary out and have a look back. Some people stop here, others talk to a practitioner about carrying on or moving to another formula. Anything worrying belongs with your GP.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Give this one a miss, honestly, because dong quai, Szechuan lovage and cyperus all move Blood. There's fo-ti in it too, which the UK MHRA has linked with rare liver reactions. So liver problems, or on a blood thinner like warfarin? Leave it. And whatever your situation, have a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start.

Blood builders for a cold, pale picture
Our women's formulas overlap a fair bit. These two are the closest to Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan, one simpler and one with fluids in mind.

Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan
Rehmannia leads nine herbs here, dong quai and eucommia and teasel among them. It's the cold palace, thin Blood one: pale, chilly hands and feet, cycles running late or light.

What people say about Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan
Great experience with ordering and delivery. This product is great but the full daily dose is too much on my stomach and I ended up having digestive issues. I cut it down to 2 tablets a day and that seems to be helping a lot.…
Liz G., verified buyerNuan Gong Yun Zi Wan: your questions
Does Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan come up in conversations about PCOS?
Now and then it does, but no, it isn't a treatment for PCOS or anything else. PCOS is a proper diagnosis with proper care that goes with it. GP first, every time. The old herbalists never thought that way anyway. They went by pattern, and that cold palace, thin Blood picture? It fits some women. Plenty of others, not at all, whatever's on their notes.
Am I the right age for Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan?
Age didn't really come into it. You'd see it used right across the reproductive years, since it was picked by pattern (cold palace, thin Blood) and that can show up at 25 just as easily as 45. Midlife's different, mind. Things tend to tip towards heat and dryness then, and herbalists would usually swap to something else altogether, Geng Nian An for instance.
What habits did herbalists pair with warming the palace?
Staying warm. Literally! No cold drinks or raw food around your period, they'd say. Wrap the lower back and belly up in winter. Eat warm stuff that builds Blood (stews, eggs, dark leafy greens). And the hot water bottle on the lower belly? A firm favourite. Homely stuff, and it matches the formula's whole idea.
Do people take it all month or only at certain times?
Most take it every day through the whole cycle, which is how a Blood-building formula is usually used. Some practitioners like to fiddle with the timing round the period itself. Fine, but that's a bespoke thing, so sort it out with a qualified herbalist. If your periods are very heavy, check with your GP before taking anything that moves Blood.
So how long will a 6-pack of Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan last me?
Sixty days. Call it two cycles, near enough. You get six bottles of 60 tablets, and at three in the morning and three in the evening that's ten days a bottle. The formula is exactly the same as the single bottle, the same nine herbs led by rehmannia, just packed for a two-cycle stretch.
