Rebuilding Blood is a slow job
In the old thinking, Blood gets used up gradually. A run of heavy months, a baby, a long winter of poor sleep and quick lunches, and the reserve drains a bit at a time. So nobody expected four roots to fill it back up in a week. They'd talk about it in cycles. Two, maybe three. And they'd be looking out for little things, like skin that's not quite so dry, nails that don't snap, getting up off the sofa without the room doing a wobble. Sixty days gets you through a couple of cycles without running out in the middle, which is really the point.
Mild stuff, as these things go. Two of the roots feed and two keep things ticking along, and that's why herbalists didn't mind people staying on it a good while. Food mattered to them too. They'd have told you to eat properly, warm and regular, because no formula builds Blood out of nothing.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Two months, two cycles
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three tablets morning and evening. Jot down how your energy, skin and cycle look now, so you've something honest to compare with later. Memory's a poor judge.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Through your first full cycle on it. Herbalists paid attention to how you felt afterwards, the days when they'd say Blood is at its lowest.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Cycle two. Dig out those notes. Still shattered all the time, bleeding heavily, or going dizzy? Then it's your GP (and probably a blood test), never mind what the old books say.
On warfarin, aspirin or any other blood thinner? Then Si Wu Tang's not for you, I'm afraid, since dong quai and Szechuan lovage both get the Blood moving. Got an operation coming up? Stop it beforehand. Pregnant, trying for a baby, or breastfeeding, and we'd want you to talk to your GP first. Anything else on prescription, have a quick word with your GP or pharmacist before you open the first bottle.
Choosing between them
Si Wu Tang and the formulas built on it
Si Wu Tang is the base of half the Blood formulas in the books. When someone's simply run down, though, it's usually these two it gets lined up against.

Si Wu Tang
Four roots for Blood alone. Chosen for the pale, dry, slightly washed-out picture, with a cycle that runs light or late.
Qi and Blood
Ba Zhen Tang
Si Wu Tang joined to the Four Gentlemen. For the person who's knackered from head to toe and pale with it, often after a long illness or a grim year.

Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang
Loads of astragalus, a dash of dong quai. Li Dongyuan reckoned Qi makes Blood, so you lift someone flat and drained first, then fill them up. Makes sense, really.

Thikra D., verified buyerSi Wu Tang: your questions
Isn't Si Wu Tang basically the anaemia one?
Not really, though we see why people ask. 'Blood deficiency' in the old sense (pale, tired, a bit swimmy when you stand up) does sound a lot like anaemia feels. They're different things, mind. Si Wu Tang's a food supplement and it isn't a treatment for anaemia or low iron. Got those symptoms? A blood test at your GP's is the obvious place to start, honestly.
Did women take it after having a baby?
Historically, yes. After a birth, Blood was thought to hit a low ebb, and Si Wu Tang (or one of its many spin-offs) was a go-to for herbalists in those first months. Breastfeeding's a different kettle of fish, mind you. Ask your GP or midwife before you take it. Oh, and its bigger cousin Ba Zhen Tang crops up in the same chats.
What foods did herbalists pair with it?
Warm, cooked, nourishing food, broadly. Bone broths, eggs, dark leafy greens, red meat for those who ate it, dates and goji berries for those who didn't. The thinking was that Blood is made from food, so a formula can only do so much if you're living on cold sandwiches and coffee. Regular meals mattered as much as the menu.
Can men take Si Wu Tang for two months?
They can, and historically some did, since it started out in a book on injuries rather than women's health. If herbalists thought you were short of Blood, you got it, man or woman. In a bloke that might look like dry skin, tired eyes, calves that cramp at night. And yes, the warnings about blood thinners and operations are the same for him as for anyone.
So how long will six bottles keep me going?
Sixty days. It's the same Si Wu Tang as the single bottle, six bottles of 60 tablets, and at three in the morning and three in the evening each bottle lasts ten days. That's about two monthly cycles, which is the stretch herbalists usually had in mind for a Blood formula.
