Why the long way round takes weeks
There's something patient built into this formula. Li Dongyuan could have gone straight at the Blood with a heap of rich roots. Instead he used five parts astragalus to one part dong quai, betting that if Qi was strong enough the body would make its own Blood. That's an indirect route, and indirect routes take longer. Herbalists following his thinking would give it weeks, not days, and they'd watch for small things first. A bit more colour, a bit more go, before anything else.
It's also a light formula, two herbs and nothing heavy, so it tends to sit well for weeks at a stretch. That's one reason it's often the one people stay on when the richer Blood tonics feel too much for their stomach.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days of steady building
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three tablets in the morning and three in the evening. With or without food is fine for most people, as it's an easy-going pair of herbs.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
If you have periods, these weeks will usually include one. Herbalists paid particular attention to the days afterwards, when Blood was said to need topping up.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Look back over the two months. Still pale, breathless or exhausted? Get yourself booked in with the GP. They can check your iron and so on properly.
Pregnant, trying for a baby, or breastfeeding? Then chat to your GP before Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang, we'd much rather you did. Dong quai doesn't mix with warfarin or other blood thinners, and astragalus may not suit anyone on medicines after an organ transplant, so check any regular medication with your GP or pharmacist.
Choosing between them
Light, lifting or rich: the near neighbours
Two other Aura formulas sit very close to this one. One shares its author, the other shares its goal.
This page
Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang
Just astragalus and dong quai. For thin Blood because Qi is low, sometimes with a flushed, warm surface over real tiredness. Light and easy on the stomach.
Same author, more lift
Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan
Also by Li Dongyuan, also led by astragalus. Herbalists chose it when tiredness felt heavy and dragged down, worse with effort, more Spleen than Blood.

Ba Zhen Tang
The Eight Treasures. Qi and Blood both obviously low? This is the big one, then. Lots more herbs in it, and it sits heavier in the stomach, if we're honest.

Is Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang taken after heavy periods?
Historically, yes, it's one herbalists reached for after a period, when they felt Blood needed rebuilding. It isn't a treatment for heavy periods or for anaemia though. Periods heavy enough to flood, last more than a week or leave you exhausted are worth a GP appointment, where a simple blood test can check your iron.
Can I take it alongside Ba Zhen Tang?
Not without a practitioner saying so, no. There's dong quai in both, so that's doubling up, and the old herbalists would just pick whichever suited you. Ba Zhen Tang's the rich one. This is the light one that goes at Qi first. Can't decide? Ask a qualified herbalist, they'll help.
Do men take it?
Certainly. Li Dongyuan wrote it for people worn down by hunger, overwork and hardship in war-torn northern China, men and women alike. These days it often gets talked about in women's health because of the link with periods, but Qi and Blood aren't gendered ideas. Pale, tired, a bit run down, man or woman? Then you'd have been in the frame.
Over the weeks on Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang, what were herbalists looking out for?
Little everyday stuff. Bit of pink back in the cheeks and lips. More puff. Nails and hair that looked a bit happier. Digestion too, mind, since food was where Qi and Blood came from, as they saw it. Too hot, fidgety or thirsty on it? Stop and rethink. And if nothing at all had shifted after two months, they'd want you checked by a doctor.
Is the 6-pack really just the single bottle, six times?
Yep, that's literally it. Six of the same 60-tablet bottles, 360 tablets, astragalus and dong quai still at five to one. Each bottle does ten days at six a day. So sixty days, all in.
