Sixty days of lifting

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan 6 Pack

6 bottles · 360 tablets · about 60 days at 6 a day

Overworked, fretting, living on biscuits? That's more or less who Li Dongyuan had in mind for Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan. Six bottles at six a day is sixty days. For a slow, steady, look-after-the-middle formula? About right, we'd say. Why take it over weeks

Li Dongyuan's long view of tiredness

Li's whole argument was that exhaustion often comes from the inside, from a Spleen and Stomach worn out by hunger, worry and graft, rather than something caught from outside. A week to lift all that? Nobody thought so. His Earth school followers gave building formulas proper time, and fussed over how you ate and slept every bit as much as the herbs. With sixty days you actually find out if that heavy, dragging, worse-by-teatime feeling is budging. One bottle in, you'd only be guessing.

And then the boring practical bit. Astragalus runs the show here, and it's got a name for being slow and steady (not flashy at all). Every day for weeks, herbalists reckoned, beat the odd day when you remembered. Steady wins, basically. So it helps not to run dry on day ten and spend a week twiddling your thumbs waiting for the postman.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Two months, three checkpoints

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three at breakfast, three at tea. Li would've nagged you about warm meals at proper times, so, you know, maybe ditch the sad desk lunch while you're at it?

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Carry on. Caught a cold, or flu? Then stop for now, because herbalists wouldn't give a lifting tonic while a bug was still at the surface. Back on once you're over it.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Notice whether energy dips less with effort. Two months on and still shattered, or worse? That's one for your GP, frankly.

Pregnant or breastfeeding, or on regular medication of any sort? Talk to your GP before Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan, please. On warfarin or another blood thinner? Then the dong quai and ginseng rule it out, and liquorice can push your blood pressure up a bit. Do ask your GP or pharmacist first.

Choosing between them

Three takes on a tired Spleen

Same family, these. Spleen Qi builders, every one. The difference? It's how the tiredness behaves, frankly: pulling you down, just sitting there quietly, or lying awake with you at 3am.

Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan: your questions

Is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan the formula people mention for prolapse?

Yes, historically the 'sinking' it was designed around included the sense of things slipping down, and that's how it came to be linked with prolapse in Chinese medicine books. It isn't a treatment for a prolapse, though. Feel a heaviness down below, or a bulge? See your GP. They can get you a proper look and send you on for pelvic floor physio.

I've been ill for ages. Is Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan what people took afterwards?

They have done for centuries. Li Dongyuan developed his ideas watching people fall ill and stay exhausted after the siege of Kaifeng, so slow recovery is very much in its history. Not a treatment for post-viral fatigue, mind, or for anything else. Still worn out weeks after being poorly? Get your GP to check you over.

Hang on, does it matter what I'm eating?

To Li Dongyuan, enormously. Meals at all hours, stuffing yourself, missing them altogether, loads of cold or raw stuff... all of it wore out the Spleen, his lot said. So his followers would've had you on hot, cooked food at set times, sat down, not grazing as you go. Rest too. Doing too much was one of his big themes.

So what were herbalists actually watching for, week to week?

Energy, mostly. Did effort knock you flat as much? And was your appetite coming back? They'd also keep an eye out for it lifting too hard (a headache, a red face, going hot and ratty) and that'd be their cue to stop. Lifting herbs weren't thought to suit people whose blood pressure runs high, which is another reason to ask your GP first.

And a 6-pack of Bu Zhong Yi Qi Wan lasts me how long?

Sixty days. It's six standard 60-tablet bottles, the same formula as the single bottle, and each one lasts ten days at three tablets morning and evening. That covers the two-month stretch most people have in mind, without a mid-way gap while you wait for another order.
