Si Jun Zi Tang (China Root & Ginseng) - 6 x 60 tablets

Four gentle herbs. You'll need a bit of patience

Mild has a downside. Si Jun Zi Tang doesn't heat, cool or push, so nobody expected fireworks from it, least of all the Song pharmacists who first standardised it. The point was to top up the Spleen slowly, so that food went back to being turned into everyday Qi. In practice that meant weeks of it alongside proper meals, often for grandparents or people with fussy stomachs who'd find anything stronger too much.

People who look at it now often describe themselves as worn out, peaky and not fussed about food, without much else going on. That's the classic picture. But weight dropping off when you're not trying? Breathless? Shattered for weeks on end? GP first, honestly. Tiredness has plenty of causes worth checking.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days of steady meals and tablets

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three with your breakfast and three more at teatime. The old advice was warm, simple food at regular times. So yes, if you've been skipping breakfast, now's the moment to stop.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Keep at it. How's your food sitting? Full, bloated, a touch queasy? A herbalist would probably swap you to a version with fragrant herbs in. Ask first, though, don't just switch.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Last two bottles. So, how are you doing? Some people keep going through the colder months, others stop. If the tiredness hasn't budged at all, that's one for your GP.

On warfarin or some other blood thinner? Don't mix it with ginseng unless you've had advice. There's liquorice too, which can push blood pressure up a little, so do mention it if yours runs high or you're on heart medicines. And if you're pregnant or breastfeeding, or you take anything regularly, we'd want you to have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, really.

Choosing between them

The Four Gentlemen and their descendants

Plenty of Aura formulas grew out of these four herbs. These are two of the closest, and herbalists chose between them by what came along with the tiredness.

This page

Si Jun Zi Tang

Just the four (ginseng, white atractylodes, poria, liquorice). Plain tired, picking at food, neither hot nor cold, and needing something really gentle? That's who it was for.

Tired and soggy

Shen Ling Bai Zhu San

Same four again, then a handful of almost-food herbs on top, yam and lotus seed and Job's tears. Tired but heavy with it, tummy loose and unsettled? This one.

Tired and full

Xiang Sha Liu Jun Zi Tang

Here the Four Gentlemen have become six, and somebody's added aucklandia and amomum for fragrance. For a weak digestion that's also stuck. Bloated and gurgling after a tiny meal, that sort of thing.

Si Jun Zi Tang: your questions

Is Si Jun Zi Tang suitable for older people?

Traditionally, yes, it was a favourite for grandparents precisely because it's so mild. Nobody got overheated on it, and delicate stomachs didn't mind it. That was the appeal. Mind you, older folk tend to be on more regular medicines, so we'd have a quick word with the GP or pharmacist before starting. Especially with blood thinners in the mix.

Should I be eating anything in particular with Si Jun Zi Tang?

Yes, and it matters a lot, if you ask a Chinese herbalist. Warm and cooked, not too fussy on the seasoning, eaten at proper times. Porridge. Rice. Soup, root veg. Cold drinks, raw salads and grazing all day were thought to tire the Spleen out. None of that's a rule, just the advice that usually came with it.

Do people take it after being unwell?

Yes, that was one of its traditional uses. When someone had been ill and their appetite and energy were slow to come back, herbalists would often reach for something mild like this. If you're still unwell, can't keep fluids down or have lost weight, though, your GP should see you first.

Why is the Spleen linked with overthinking?

Because in Five Element theory overthinking is the Spleen's emotion. Herbalists believed that chewing things over endlessly, often while eating at a desk, wore the Spleen down. That's why the old advice with Spleen formulas included sitting down to eat and not working through meals. If worry is taking over, though, it's worth talking to your GP.

Does the 6-pack contain anything different?

No, it's the same four herbs in the same 60-tablet bottles, six of them packed together. At six a day each bottle lasts ten days, so the pack covers sixty. It's simply for people who'd rather have the whole stretch in hand than reorder every week and a bit.
