Building back up takes longer than running down
Nobody gets into the Gui Pi state quickly. It's months of late nights, too many lists and meals eaten standing up, until the Spleen, as Chinese medicine sees it, stops making enough Blood and the Heart has nothing to rest on. So a tonic like this? You take it steadily, week after week. That's how it was always done. Astragalus, ginseng and longan are builders, not quick fixes, and the old herbalists kept score in appetite, in colour, in how you'd slept (never in days). Which is really what six bottles are for. Sixty days of the same thing, long enough to tell if it actually suits you.
It's also a nudge to look at the worrying itself. Yan Yonghe was blunt that too much thinking is what wore the Spleen down in the first place, so the formula was only ever half of it. The other half is the kettle, the walk and the list you finally put down.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days for a tired, busy mind
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three in the morning, three in the evening, or a little more towards the evening if you prefer, as long as it's six a day. Eat regular, warm meals, which this theory takes very seriously.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Watch the little stuff. Are you hungrier? Waking easier? A bit less grey and flat? And if your mood's sinking or sleep's getting worse, don't sit on it, go and see your GP.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Take stock. Herbalists often kept going with a tonic like this if it suited, or switched formula as the picture changed. Can't make your mind up? That's what a practitioner's for.
If there's a baby on the way, or you're breastfeeding, or the doctor's got you on something regular, run it past your GP first, honestly. Dong quai and ginseng don't go with warfarin or other blood thinners. One more thing, mind: fleeceflower vine is off the same plant as he shou wu (the MHRA has linked that with rare liver problems), so if your liver's ever given you bother, have a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Choosing between them
Tired, sleepless or both? Three neighbours
Gui Pi Tang sits somewhere between the big tonics and the evening formulas. Here's how herbalists told them apart.

Nathalia F., verified buyerGui Pi Tang: your questions
I've seen Gui Pi Tang mentioned with anxiety and insomnia, what's that about?
History, mostly. In the old theory, worrying, sleeping badly and running on empty all hang off the same Heart and Spleen pattern, so if you were the knackered overthinker staring at the ceiling at 3am, you'd likely have been handed this. Treating anxiety, insomnia or depression, though, it doesn't. If you've been sleeping badly or feeling low for a while, honestly, start with your GP.
Hang on, what's it got to do with long or heavy periods?
Bit of theory here. Chinese medicine says the Spleen keeps the Blood where it should be, in the vessels, and a weak one got the blame for cycles that dragged on too long or wiped you out. Theory, mind you, not treatment. Heavy, prolonged or unusual bleeding always needs checking by your GP, whatever formula you're taking.
What did herbalists say about food?
Warm, cooked and regular. The Spleen, in this system, dislikes cold, raw food and skipped meals, and loves a bowl of something warm at roughly the same time each day. Congee with a few longan or red dates is the classic Chinese version. Eating lunch at your desk while answering emails is, sadly, exactly what the theory warns against.
Is it only for women?
No. It turns up a lot in women's health because of the Blood side, but Yan Yonghe wrote it for anyone worn down by too much thinking. Students in exam season, carers, people in long, worrying jobs: all of them fit the old picture, whatever their sex, and herbalists have given it to men and women alike.
Is there anything different in the 6 pack?
No, nothing. It's six bottles of the same Gui Pi Tang as the single bottle, sixty tablets in each, which comes to sixty days at six a day. You just get the whole stretch in one go, so you're not running out on a Friday night. Keep the unopened bottles sealed somewhere cool and dry.
