Why the Eight Treasures were taken slowly
Building formulas work on a different clock from the clearing ones. A herb that scatters a chill is judged in days. Rehmannia, dong quai and ginseng were thought of in weeks and months, because the old idea was that you're refilling a store that took a long time to empty. A bad winter, a long illness, a new baby and no sleep. None of that happened over a weekend, so herbalists didn't expect it to turn round in one either. Sixty days at six a day gives the formula a fair hearing.
It's also a rich formula, and rich formulas like a calm stomach. That's why herbalists usually started it once a cold or a tummy bug had passed, and paused it if one turned up halfway through. Nothing clever. Just letting the digestion cope with eight fairly heavy roots.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days, in three stretches
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three in the morning, three at night, ideally with food while your stomach gets used to the rehmannia. If it sits heavy, meals are the easy fix.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
The settled middle bit. Keep the timing regular. If a cold comes along, herbalists would simply stop for a few days and pick it up again once it's gone.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
A good point to take stock. Colour, appetite, how the stairs feel. Still dragging yourself about after two months? Mention it to your GP, honestly.
Pregnant or breastfeeding? Then we'd leave Ba Zhen Tang alone unless your GP's said yes. There's dong quai in it, so it's a no if you're on warfarin or any other blood thinner (sorry), and mind the liquorice, which can nudge blood pressure up, while ginseng mightn't get on with diabetes medication. Take anything regularly? Have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, we'd much rather you did.
Choosing between them
Ba Zhen Tang and its tonic neighbours
Three formulas that all get picked for a depleted, washed-out person. Herbalists split them by where the tiredness seems to come from.
This page
Ba Zhen Tang
Qi and Blood both low, roughly in equal measure. Pale, tired, out of puff on the stairs. Balanced in temperature, so neither warming nor cooling.
For the tired worrier
Gui Pi Tang
Chosen when the depletion comes with a busy mind. The Heart and Spleen picture: drained, chewing things over, restless in the small hours.

Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang
Li Dongyuan's astragalus and dong quai pair. Herbalists reach for it when Blood is thin because Qi is low, and something lighter on the stomach is wanted.

Is Ba Zhen Tang something people take after having a baby?
Yes, historically it's been one of the best-known choices for the months after childbirth, especially in Chinese families. The idea was that pregnancy and birth draw heavily on both Qi and Blood. Mind you, herbalists mostly waited till breastfeeding was done, or got a practitioner's nod first. We'd do the same, frankly. Still feeding? Then it's your GP or health visitor you want to ask.
Doesn't Ba Zhen Tang get mentioned a lot when people talk about anaemia?
It does, because the pale, tired, lightheaded picture herbalists described sounds a lot like what people associate with low iron. But it isn't a treatment for anaemia, and Qi and Blood deficiency isn't the same thing as a blood test result. If you're pale and exhausted, please see your GP first. A simple blood test can rule a lot out.
How long did herbalists usually keep someone on it?
Weeks, sometimes a few months. Never days, really. Tonics were slow builders in the old way of thinking, so a practitioner would pop back in every few weeks and tweak things as the person changed. Someone who started feeling the cold might be moved on to Shi Quan Da Bu Tang, for instance. It wasn't really treated as a forever formula, more a stretch of rebuilding.
Is there a best time of year for Ba Zhen Tang?
Not strictly, though plenty of herbalists liked building formulas in autumn and early winter, ahead of the cold months. The Spleen sits under late summer in the Five Elements, when the harvest comes in, so there's a nice logic to starting then. In practice, it's taken whenever someone's been run down, whatever the calendar says.
Is the 6-pack the same Ba Zhen Tang as the single bottle?
Exactly the same. It's six of our standard 60-tablet bottles, 360 tablets in all, with the same eight herbs. At six tablets a day each bottle lasts ten days, so the pack covers sixty days. Handy if you'd rather not run out at day ten and have a gap.
