Letting trapped warmth find its way out
Here's the odd bit. Herbalists reckoned cold hands and feet could come from warmth that's stuck rather than warmth that's gone, so you'd get Qi corked up by tension, a warm middle, and fingers left out in the cold. Funny old idea, but it hangs together. And it's not something you'd pick up in a week, is it? It's months of gritting your teeth in meetings and biting back what you really wanted to say. So nobody back then thought a handful of days on the formula would sort much. Two months lets the four herbs rub along with real life, the calm weeks and the rotten ones.
Honestly, there's not a lot to it. Four herbs, equal amounts, nothing heating or heavy. That's partly why people find it easy to stick with for a while (and, frankly, with so little going on in the bottle, it's easier to tell how you're actually getting on).
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days, three in the morning and evening
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three with breakfast, three in the evening. Then just watch where the tension goes. Shoulders? Stomach? Or is it your hands, freezing at the desk while everyone else is in T-shirts?
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
The routine should feel automatic now. Herbalists would pair this stretch with something that lets feelings out, a long walk, a proper conversation, even a decent shout in the car.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Take stock. Some people carry on, some move to a neighbouring formula like Xiao Yao San. Anything that's bothered you for weeks, or is new, is worth taking to your GP.
There's a fair amount of liquorice in Si Ni San, which matters more over two months than over ten days, so it isn't for anyone with high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, or on diuretics or heart medication, and it's a no in pregnancy and while breastfeeding. Taking anything else most days? Pop in and have a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start, we'd much rather you did.
Choosing between them
Si Ni San and its Liver-family relatives
Si Ni San sits at the root of a whole family of Liver formulas. We'd put these two next to it, since they come off the same branch and people tend to ask about all three at once.

Si Ni San
The original four. Herbalists went for it when tension looked to be locking the warmth in, so you'd have cool hands and feet and a tummy tied in a knot.
Tension plus tiredness
Xiao Yao San
Its Song-dynasty grandchild, if you like. The pick for someone wound up and worn out at once, short on Blood, appetite coming and going.

Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang
Only white peony and liquorice, the pair hidden inside Si Ni San. Old texts kept it for muscles and bellies that grab and cramp up, not ones that just ache.

What people say about Si Ni San
I have suffered from prolapse for years and it was better after using one bottle of this product. I am using a second bottle now and the condition is improving.

People ask us about Si Ni San and Raynaud's. Is there a link?
Only a loose one, because the traditional picture of cool fingers and toes sounds familiar to many people with Raynaud's. But Si Ni San is a food supplement, not a treatment for Raynaud's or any circulation problem. Fingers that go white or blue, or numbness that doesn't pass, are for your GP. The herbal tradition was describing a pattern of trapped Qi, which isn't the same thing as a diagnosis.
Did herbalists see it as a formula for stress?
In a way, yes, although they'd have said 'constrained Liver Qi' rather than stress. Think of the one who bottles it all up, quietly fumes, and then wonders why their stomach's in a state. Fair enough so far. But if stress or low mood is really getting on top of you, please go and see your GP. We'd say that whatever else you're trying, honestly.
Can I take it alongside Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang?
We'd suggest not combining them yourself. Shao Yao Gan Cao Tang is the peony and liquorice already inside Si Ni San, so taking both doubles up on liquorice, which is exactly the herb to be careful with over weeks. A qualified herbalist might occasionally adjust a mix like that, but it's their call to make with you, not one for the kitchen table.
Does the time of year matter?
Herbalists did think about it. Si Ni San is a Wood formula, and Wood belongs to spring, the season when things are meant to push outwards. Some practitioners like starting a formula like this in late winter or early spring. Cold hands are more obvious in winter, of course, so that's when plenty of people notice the pattern in the first place.
Is the 6-pack the same Si Ni San as the single bottle?
Yes, exactly the same. Each bottle holds 60 tablets of the same four-herb formula, and at three in the morning and three in the evening one bottle lasts ten days. Six bottles cover sixty days, which is simply a more realistic length for a formula people tend to stay with for a while.
