Two cycles, start to finish

Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang 6 Pack

6 bottles · 360 tablets · about 60 days at 6 a day

Herbalists judged Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang by the monthly cycle rather than the calendar. Six bottles take you through sixty days, which for most women means two full cycles of building Qi and Blood with motherwort keeping things moving. Why take it over weeks

Watching it over cycles, not days

With most formulas you count the weeks. With this one, herbalists counted periods. The traditional picture is a cycle that turns up late, light or sluggish, in a woman who's pale and running a bit low. You can't tell much about that from ten days of tablets. You need to see a cycle come and go, and ideally another one after that, before anyone can say whether the pattern's shifting. So two cycles became a natural unit, give or take a few days either way.

Some women take it straight through. Others put a bit more attention on the week or so after a period, when the old texts say Blood needs rebuilding. Whichever you do, scribble down the dates (and how each cycle actually felt, bit by bit). Honestly, a cheap notebook beats memory every time.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days, roughly two cycles

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Start whenever suits you. Three tablets morning and night. Note the date of your next period and anything about it, the timing, the flow, how tired you felt.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Usually where the first full cycle on the formula lands. Herbalists liked the days just after a period for rebuilding, so keep going steadily through them.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Second cycle. Compare your notes. Periods gone missing, really heavy, or just not like yours any more? Stop there and go and see your GP.

Pregnant, or trying to be? Then Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang's a no, because motherwort moves Blood in the womb, and if you're breastfeeding we'd want your GP to say so first. On warfarin, or diabetes medication, or anything else regular? Dong quai and ginseng don't get on with all of that, so have a word with your GP or pharmacist before you start.

Other formulas for a low, slow cycle

We've a handful of formulas that come up around periods, if you look. These two sit closest to Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang, and the difference is mostly about cold and fluid.

Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang

Qi and Blood both low and the cycle slow off the mark. Pale, tired, and the period late or light. Builds first, with motherwort adding a gentle push.

When it runs cold

Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan

Warm the Palace. Picked when the cycle seemed cold as well as thin: chilly lower belly, cold hands and feet, a dragging feeling that eased with a hot water bottle.

Heavy and puffy

Dang Gui Shao Yao San

Low Blood with damp alongside it. Herbalists chose it for a dull, crampy, waterlogged sort of cycle, with puffy ankles and a heavy head.

Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang: your questions

Is Ba Zhen Yi Mu Tang used for irregular or light periods?

Historically, yes, that's where herbalists most often reached for it, when a cycle ran late or light alongside general tiredness. It isn't a treatment for any menstrual condition though. Periods that stop, change suddenly or become very irregular need a GP's eye, partly because pregnancy, thyroid problems and PCOS can all be behind them, and they deserve a proper look.

Who traditionally took it?

Mostly women in their cycling years who felt drained, often after a tiring stretch like a long illness, a demanding job or the months after a baby (once breastfeeding was over). The common thread was a pale, worn-out look plus a cycle that seemed to lack oomph. It wasn't really a formula for teenagers just starting their periods or for after the menopause.

Can I take it alongside Xiao Yao San?

Not off your own bat, no. There's dong quai and white peony in both, so you'd be doubling up, and the old herbalists tended to pick the one that fit rather than pile two on. Is it as much snappy and wound up as tired? Then a practitioner might well go for Xiao Yao San on its own. Ask one first, we'd say.

Did herbalists give any food advice with it?

Loads. Your gran would approve of most of it, frankly: hot meals at proper times, soups, a stew on a cold night. Iced drinks and piles of raw food were thought to chill the middle and slow down the making of Blood. In some homes a few dates go in the pot, or there's chicken broth on the go. Nothing magic about it.

So how many cycles will I get out of the 6-pack?

About two for most women. It's six standard 60-tablet bottles, so 360 tablets, and at six a day that's sixty days. If your cycle's on the long side you might get a little under two. The formula is identical to the single bottle; there's just more of it in one go.
