Why hair formulas were never a ten-day affair
Hair is slow. It grows about as fast as a garden hedge in a dry summer, so the old herbalists never expected much from a fortnight of anything. In their way of thinking, Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan goes to work on Liver Blood and Kidney Essence, the deep reserves they believed showed on the outside in your hair, nails and knees. Reserves like that weren't thought to fill up quickly, so it was usually taken over a season rather than a week or two.
People come to it for all sorts of reasons. Early greying, hair that seems thinner than it used to, or just a sense that they're winding down a bit sooner than they'd like. Fair enough. But we'd be daft not to say it plainly (it's a food supplement, it isn't a treatment for hair loss), and if you're suddenly shedding, or it's coming out in patches, honestly, go and show your GP.
10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all
Sixty days, with an eye on your liver
Bottles 1–2
Days 1 to 20
Three in the morning, three at night. We'd tie them to something you already do (breakfast, brushing your teeth) so you don't forget. How's your tummy taking it? Poria's in there to help a rich mix like this sit easy.
Bottles 3–4
Days 21 to 40
Same again, but watch for the liver signs. Yellow skin or eyes? Dark pee, pale poo, or a tiredness that's just not like you? Stop the tablets that day and get yourself to the GP.
Bottles 5–6
Days 41 to 60
Last bottles. Then have a think. The old habit was a break between seasons, not taking it forever and a day, so if you fancy another round, have a word with your GP before you do, mind.
Because the MHRA has linked he shou wu with rare liver reactions, Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan isn't for anyone with current or past liver problems, and it's best avoided in pregnancy, while breastfeeding or alongside blood thinners such as warfarin. Taking any regular medicine? Please check with your GP or pharmacist before you start.
Choosing between them
Seven treasures and their nearest neighbours
Fo-ti isn't the only way into the Kidneys. Here's how herbalists told this one apart from two formulas that sit close by on the shelf.

Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan
Chosen when both Blood and Essence felt thin, often with early greying or tired knees in the picture. Rich, gently warming and led very clearly by fo-ti.
Seeds for Essence
Wu Zi Yan Zong Wan
Five seeds and berries for the Kidneys. Historically more of a men's formula, picked when deep reserves felt low without the Blood side being a big part of things.

Yao Tong Pian
A modern pharmacy formula built round eucommia and teasel. Herbalists thought of it when the small of the back felt cold and tired, rather than with hair in mind.

Heidi M., verified buyer of Xiao Yao SanQi Bao Mei Ran Dan: your questions
Is Qi Bao Mei Ran Dan used for grey hair?
Historically, yes. It's the formula people in China most linked with keeping a dark head of hair, because hair was seen as the 'flower' of the Kidneys. That's tradition, though, not a promise. It's a food supplement and isn't a treatment for greying or hair loss, and any sudden or patchy hair loss is worth taking to your GP.
So how long would someone have stuck with it, back then?
A season, roughly. Not a few days, anyway. Tonics for the deep reserves were thought of as slow work, so herbalists tended to give them over weeks or a couple of months and then pause. Because of the liver caution with he shou wu, we'd suggest you don't run it on and on without checking in with your GP.
Can I take it with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan?
It's best not to double up on your own. There's a lot of overlap. Both lean on the Kidneys, both are on the rich side, and a herbalist would normally just choose one, going by whether it looked more like dryness or more like thin Blood to them. Fancy mixing Aura formulas? Then really, ask a qualified herbalist first, that's what they're for.
Is there a best time of year to start it, or not really?
Traditionally, winter was its natural season. The Kidneys belong to Water, winter's element, and plenty of people liked to take their Kidney tonics as the nights drew in. There's no rule about it, mind. Some people simply start when they feel run down, whatever the month says.
Is the 6-pack the same as the single bottle?
Yes, it's exactly the same formula, just six bottles of 60 tablets in one box. Six a day means a bottle's gone in ten days, so you've got roughly sixty days in the box. Pop the spares somewhere cool and dry (not the steamy bathroom cabinet, if it were us) with the lids screwed on.
