Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang (Hookweed Root & Szechuan Lovage) - 6 x 60 tablets

Old stuckness, in Wang Qingren's eyes, shifts slowly

Wang Qingren wrote this one for aches that had dug in. His reasoning was that if discomfort had hung around long enough for the usual wind-damp formulas to fail, the Blood itself had stalled in the channels. Stalled Blood wasn't something he expected to move in a few days. So weeks it was, usually. And quite often with acupuncture or tui na going on at the same time (having a go at the same stuck spots from a couple of directions, if you like).

Who looks at it now? Usually someone with an ache that's been parked in one place for months. Sharp, not dull. Worse at night, and grumpy with it. To be clear, though, it's not a treatment for arthritis or back pain or an injury, none of that. If the pain's new, or getting worse, or you've got swelling, numbness or a temperature with it, honestly, that's your GP first and herbs a long way after.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Sixty days, with regular check-ins

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three at breakfast, three at dinner, food in your tummy if you can. We'd jot down where it's stiff and how you're sleeping. Just a line. Memory's a terrible judge after a fortnight.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

With this many Blood movers, watch for easy bruising, nosebleeds or heavier periods than usual. If any of those turn up, stop and see your GP.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

Finish the pack and take a break. Strongly moving formulas weren't traditionally run on and on, so talk to a qualified herbalist or your GP before going again.

Peach kernel, safflower, dong quai, red sage, myrrh. Every one of them can affect clotting. So pregnant, trying for a baby or breastfeeding? Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang's not for you, sorry. Same if you're on warfarin, aspirin or any other blood thinner. Got an operation coming up? Stop it well beforehand. Oh, and the liquorice can push blood pressure up, so if your periods are heavy or you take any regular medicine, have a word with your GP or pharmacist first, we'd rather you did.

Choosing between them

Other formulas for stubborn, achy days

Aura has several formulas for aches in the old Chinese sense. These two sit closest, and herbalists told them apart by whether stuck Blood, cold or damp heat seemed to be in charge.

This page

Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang

Wang Qingren's Blood mover. The ache stays put somewhere in the body or limbs, it's sharp, it's often worse at night, and frankly it's been there ages.

Cold, tired lower back

Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang

Fourteen herbs, mostly for older folk. Cold, stiff, tired lower back and knees, worse when it's damp out? That one. It builds you up more and pushes a lot less.

Heavy, warm joints

Guan Jie Yan Wan

A newer one, from the Chinese pharmacy. Think joints that feel heavy and stiff and slightly warm when you touch them, Damp and Heat stuck in the channels, as they'd have put it.

Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang: your questions

Is Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang used for sciatica?

No, it's not a treatment for sciatica. It does get mentioned a lot when people talk about it, mind. Going back, herbalists would reach for it when there was a sharp ache that stayed put somewhere in the body and limbs (cyathula's in there to carry things down into the legs). But leg pain with numbness or weakness? Any change in your bladder or bowels? Don't wait. Get urgent medical help.

Why do the aches have to be 'fixed' for this formula?

Because that's how Wang Qingren recognised Blood stasis. In his thinking, Blood that had slowed and stuck stayed put, so the discomfort lived in one spot, felt sharp or stabbing and tended to be worse at night. Aches that wandered about were put down to Wind instead, and herbalists would choose differently.

I'm having acupuncture or massage too. Is that alright with it?

Yep, fine, and pretty traditional really. Chinese clinics often put it together with acupuncture or tui na. Same stuck channels, two angles. Just tell whoever's treating you that you're on it. Blood thinners as well, if you take any, because some of those treatments can leave you a bit bruised.

Does cold weather make a difference?

Herbalists thought so. Cold was said to slow the Blood further, which is why people with old, stuck aches often noticed them more in winter. Keeping warm, especially round the joints that grumble, and staying gently mobile rather than sitting still for hours was the usual advice to go with it.

What's in the Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang 6-pack?

Six bottles of the same eleven-herb formula as the single bottle, 360 tablets in total. At six a day that's ten days a bottle and sixty days for the box. It suits people who've settled on a longer run, ideally after talking it through with a practitioner, and want it all on hand.
