Wen Jing Tang (Black Cardamon & Angelica Sinesis) - 6 x 60 tablets

Warming a cold cycle takes a while

Wen Jing Tang was written for a puzzling mix: cold low down, a little warmth and dryness up top, and Blood that's both thin and slowed. Herbalists compared cold in the womb to a river in winter, and no one expects a frozen river to run freely after one sunny afternoon. They'd usually keep someone on a warming formula through a couple of cycles, asking each month about the chill in the lower belly, the pull towards hot-water bottles, how the flow started. Two months of tablets lets you go through that without a gap in the middle.

It suits the colder half of the year in many people's minds, and that's when lots of women first notice the pattern. Warm feet, warm food and keeping your lower back covered were always part of the advice too. Herbalists would have frowned at iced drinks straight from the fridge, for what it's worth, which is a hard sell in summer.

10 days a bottle, about 60 days in all

Two cycles, sixty days

Bottles 1–2

Days 1 to 20

Three tablets morning and evening. Note how cold your lower belly and feet feel, and how often the hot-water bottle comes out. Those were the old yardsticks.

Bottles 3–4

Days 21 to 40

Your first full cycle on it. Iced drinks and big cold salads? We'd go easy, honestly, and have something hot instead. Herbalists were firm about not undoing the warming.

Bottles 5–6

Days 41 to 60

The second cycle. Compare with your notes. And if your periods are heavy or painful or all over the place (or there's any bleeding at all after the menopause), that's a GP job before anything else, full stop.

Any chance you're pregnant, or breastfeeding? Then leave Wen Jing Tang on the shelf, because tree peony bark and Sichuan lovage get the Blood moving. On warfarin or another blood thinner? Same answer, the dong quai's the problem there. The liquorice can nudge blood pressure up too, over a longer stretch like this one. Heavy periods, or any medication at all, and we'd really rather you had a word with your GP or pharmacist first.

Choosing between them

Other formulas for a cold or depleted cycle

We keep a couple of Wen Jing Tang's near neighbours too. Herbalists split them by how much cold, thinness or stagnation they saw.

This page

Wen Jing Tang

Eleven herbs from the Golden Cabinet. Chosen when cold below came with warmth and dryness above, and Blood was both thin and stagnant.

Warm the palace

Nuan Gong Yun Zi Wan

Herbalists reached for it when the womb, or 'palace', was said to be cold and the Blood thin, with chilly hands and feet and a light, late cycle.

Stasis, less cold

Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan

Five herbs for a fixed, heavy, stuck feeling low down. Picked when stagnation, dark blood and clots were the main theme rather than cold.

Wen Jing Tang: your questions

Does Wen Jing Tang come up in conversations about menopause?

Yes, partly because Zhang Zhongjing's own example was a woman of about fifty, with warm palms in the evening and dry lips. In Japan, as Unkeito, it's still well known around midlife. But it isn't a menopause treatment, and it's a food supplement. Hot flushes, irregular bleeding or bleeding after your periods have stopped should be checked by your GP.

Is it linked with fertility?

Herbalists historically reached for warming formulas when a cold-natured cycle was part of the picture for women hoping to conceive. That's tradition, not a fertility treatment. And because Wen Jing Tang contains Blood-moving herbs, it should be stopped as soon as pregnancy is possible. If you're trying for a baby, involve your GP or fertility clinic before taking anything.

Does winter make a difference?

Herbalists certainly thought so. A cold pattern was expected to feel worse when the weather turned, so many people start Wen Jing Tang in autumn or winter. They'd also tell you to keep your lower back and feet warm and avoid sitting on cold ground, which sounds like something your nan would say, and probably was.

Can I take it with Si Wu Tang?

We wouldn't combine them without advice. Wen Jing Tang already contains dong quai, white peony and Sichuan lovage, three of Si Wu Tang's four roots, so you'd be doubling up on Blood-moving herbs. A herbalist might move someone from one to the other between cycles, but that's a decision to make with a practitioner.

Is the 6-pack the same formula?

Yes. Six bottles of the same vegetarian Wen Jing Tang, 60 tablets each. At three morning and evening, a bottle lasts ten days and the pack lasts sixty, about two monthly cycles. The tablets and dose are identical to the single bottle.
